A Game of Inches

If one day you start to not feel like going and working out, or you just don’t feel the motivation all you have to do these days is go to you tube and you can find some inspiration.  I am definitely one of those people who loves a good old fashion sports movie where at some point of the movie someone, usually the coach, gives a speech that makes you want to get up off the couch (after the movie is over) and put in the extra work needed to be the best possible athlete you can be.

I’ll go back to what I wrote a couple of blogs ago. Remember this quote- “Many athletes have tremendous G-d –given gifts…Who are these individuals?  You have never heard of them and you never will.” Hopefully you remember my point of quoting John Wooden was so that you wouldn’t end up like those amazingly talented athletes who never put in enough effort to actually reach their potential.  Don’t be that player…what a waste of talent.

One of my favorite motivational speeches is from the movie “Any Given Sunday.”  Yes, it’s a football movie, but it applies to baseball, especially the part that I pulled out below.  The title of the speech is “A Game of Inches.”  This part of the speech can absolutely be applied to baseball and what we do each and every time we step out onto the diamond.  So read below and replace the word football with baseball and it sure does make sense.

“…You know, when you get old, in life, things get taken from you. I mean, that's... that's... that's a part of life. But, you only learn that when you start losin' stuff. You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game - life or football - the margin for error is so small. I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don't quite make it. One half second too slow, too fast and you don't quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break of the game, every minute, every second…” Below is the link to the entire speech.  It’s 4:41 minutes…1:40 seconds in is where the above quote starts.  I can watch over and over again and it makes me want to work harder.

Baseball, Football, Basketball, Golf, Swimming, Tennis...LIFE…is a game of inches.  Each split second decision that we make has some type of outcome. For every action, there is a reaction.   Now think about being on the field.  Are you at a point where you think you have done everything to get every possible advantage?  Have you put in the work to turn that double play faster than any other team out there? Can you throw out the other teams fastest runner because you’ve worked that much harder?  Have you done extra sprints in your backyard, driveway or the track just in case one day it’s the bottom of ninth inning and you hit a dribbler to short and you need to beat the throw to move on in the playoffs?  Just think about- are you doing everything you can to make sure you gain that extra inch?
